Red Bull – Simply Cola Review

There's a tiny bull on the pull-tab!

There's a tiny bull on the pull-tab!

Now before you go getting hot and bothered because I’m doing another energy drink, let me explain.  This isn’t your ordinary can of Red Bull.  It’s an all-natural attempt by Red Bull to break into the cola genre of sodas, dominated by the uber-sweet Pepsi and king-cola, Coke.  Most other cola only enjoy fleeting brand notoriety like RC Cola and the caffeine-death imminence of Jolt.  Every off-brand has their cola, and most taste about the same, so curiosity got the better of me when I spied this at a gas-station on our way back from Cali last week.

I hate the taste of Red Bull, always have.  That sweet-sour bubblegum flavor just doesn’t do it for me.  I’m hoping they have done something radically different with this.  Here goes nothing.

Holy cola, man.  And that’s just the smell so far.  It’s like someone has ground up kola nuts, mixed it with sugar and let me snort it.  I kind of like it, actually.  The taste isn’t half as bad as I was expecting, a lightly citrus, syrupy-sweetness with hints of vanilla and lime mixing in with the unmistakable kola flavor.  The site lists sixteen separate flavors used in this drink, most of them something you wouldn’t expect, like cardamom, pine, mace and mustard seed.  I can even pick out the licorice and clove.  This is a very complex cola.

I am actually quite impressed with this, much to my surprise.  It starts off sweet, like Pepsi, but leaves your tongue dry like Coke.  The flavors don’t last long, however, prompting me to either find another can or never try it again.  Maybe I’ll get a case.

This is made in Switzerland, unlike regular Red Bull, which is made in Austria.  That’s a fact I picked up from Taurine Rules, who did his own review of this product, despite it not actually being an energy drink (he didn’t know).

This will probably never compete with the likes of the big boys, it’s just too different.  People with well-rounded palettes will appreciate it much more than your average soda-swiller.  Not a bad attempt by Red Bull to do something different.  22 g of sugar per 8.4 oz can, but also available in 12 oz size.

Score: 4 out of 5. Most people will never be able to appreciate what they’ve done here, sadly.  Quite tasty, but sugar-loaded.

**Danithius Review Rebuttal!**

Wow, this is one complicated cola.  One that demands to be sipped and savored, not pounded for a quick buzz.  They use at least 18 different exotic flavorings – it’s a culinary nerd’s delight!  I mean, there’s mustard seed in this thing!  Mustard seed in a cola!

But all of the ingredients seem to jive together really well.  Yes, it is still a sugary-sweet beverage with not a ton of nutritional value, so I can’t give it full points.  But I’d put it right up there with WiseGuise, maybe even at a 4.5
