Top 10 Healthy Drinks of 2009

February 9th, 2010

Welcome back, healthy libation-lovers!  It’s once again time to announce the 10 best healthy drinks that we’ve reviewed in the previous year.  In deciding our favorite whistle-whetters, we took into account a variety of factors, like flavor, sugar content, originality, and corporate eco-friendliness/overall philosophy.  This year had some exciting changes in the beverage industry, as we saw companies big and small getting on the healthy-alternative bandwagon. Buckle up, grab your own favorite beverage and read on!

Red Bull – Simply Cola

WiseGuise: This is Red Bull’s delicious attempt to break into the cola market with an all-natural soda that is loaded with complex flavors, coming off very well against its mighty competitors. I once believed this to be a flash-in-the-pan sort of thing, but I am seeing it more often in gas stations and grocery stores, a sign that this palate-pleaser might be here to stay.

Danithius: This stuff thrills me from a pure foodie perspective. The ingredient list reads like a spice catalog! Who puts mace and mustard seed in their cola, for crying out loud?? But it works so well for it, delivering a complex, refreshing, and very delicious cola. Yes, it is still loaded with sugar. (Why do you think it’s number 10?) But when you’re in the mood for a good cola, it’s hard to do it better than this. All-natural, excellent flavor, and it’s not too sweet.

Fizz Ed.pomegranate.cherry

Fizz Ed Pomegranate Cherry

Danithius: Fizz Ed is still in the game after making last year’s list, churning out a couple of new flavors to add to their previously sparse repertoire. We like them because they are working for positive change in the beverage habits of kids and adults alike. Smaller can sizes, low sugar, and real fruit juice sweetener make this stuff sing. This new flavor in particular has a sweet-tart flavor that rounds out their selection nicely.

WiseGuise: Although I haven’t tried this particular flavor yet, I found all others to be enjoyable, and have to agree with Danithius. Fizz Ed is doing what we need to see more of: healthier drinks that appeal to a younger generation and adults alike.

Function: Night Life

WiseGuise: This first top score for Function came with some sensuous claims about its additives’ effect on sexual potency, and an equally impressive flavor. Function’s other drinks also deserve an honorable mention, the majority pleasing to our mouths, minds and souls. Function is a company dedicated to helping people live better through chemistry. Keep it up, Dr. Alex.

Danithius: I have not yet had the privilege of imbibing this purported virility-enhancing “sexy tonic”, but I do support the idea behind the brand. A medical doctor who’s devoted his life to formulating healthier drinks for a thirsty populace? Kudos to you, Doc.

Sweet Leaf_minthoney

Sweet Leaf Mint & Honey Green Tea

Danithius: This stuff makes your taste buds sit up and sing. I was immediately addicted. It’s simple, it’s fresh-tasting, and it’s delicious. It does have more sugar than similar flavors over at Honest Tea, but wow, do they use those sugar grams well! And it is still a lot better for you than many of the syrupy-sweet alternatives out there.

WiseGuise: I still haven’t tried this?!? What is wrong with me? Being the fancier of tea that I am, I feel slightly ashamed of myself, I think I’ll go brew myself a glass of tea right now.

sobe_fuji_apple_pear SoBe LifeWater – Fuji Apple Pear

WiseGuise: What would a Best of list be without LifeWater? SoBe remains a heavy hitter for us, nailing home-runs on flavor, sugar content and overall appeal. This is quite a popular flavor, I’ve turned many onto LifeWater with this, even those leery of ‘flavored waters.’ The jury is still out on stevia and erythritol, but until we hear otherwise, we will continue to enjoy these magical offerings.

Danithius: I love this stuff! It is the first zero-calorie LifeWater that I tried, and it left a big impression on me. I didn’t think I would ever like a “zero-cal” drink, but with its combo of natural erythritol and stevia leaf extract, SoBe won me over with this one.

oogave_WatermelonCream_logo

Oogave Watermelon Cream

Danithius: The folks at Oogave were kind enough to send us a sampler pack of their flavors, and I really loved this Watermelon Cream. It was deliciously sweet without packing in a lot of sugar grams – evidently a trait of their singular sweetener, agave nectar. And Oogave’s attitude as a company was equally refreshing, putting an emphasis on consumer health and moderation. Now that’s a much-needed yet all-too-rare outlook that I wish Oogave could somehow put into virus form and sneeze all over their big-soda counterparts with it!

WiseGuise: Although I personally found some of their drinks too sweet for my delicate taste-buds, I found the grapefruit soda rather intriguing, something I have not come across before or since. It’s a tricky flavor to use, but they managed to make it enjoyable. Oogave is doing right by departing from the main soda flock and using an alternative, natural sweetener that I wish I saw more of, in moderation, of course.

SUPERFRUIT_PUNCH

Honest Ade Superfruit Punch

Danithius: Honest Ade is an excellent addition to Honest Tea’s lineup of healthy beverages, and this flavor in particular really got me by the brain banana. And only 12 grams of sugar per serving? That’s icing on the cake. (Sensible icing. Not that three-inch thick crap you buy at CostCo.) I really don’t know how they get so much sweetness and taste with such a low sugar content, but I love it! This Superfruit Punch uses the juice from well-known antioxidant “superfruits” goji and yumberry. And the best part is, they don’t charge you forty bucks per bottle for it! (Nor do they try and get you to sell the stuff to your friends and family).

WiseGuise: Again, a drink I, sadly, have not tried. I have imbibed several other Honest Ades, and have enjoyed them all to varying degrees. These so-called “superfruits” are becoming more popular every year, so I’m curious, when will they will be demoted to regular fruits? I mean, if you never had a banana before and then tried one, it would blow your mind, man. Super banana.3jones-logo

GABA-lemon-honey

Jones GABA Lemon Honey Tea

Danithius: Jones Soda has been doing some wonderful things with their product lines over the last few years. It’s almost like they got ahold of our dream diary or something… First, they eliminated HFCS from all of their soda lines, and for that alone they deserve some props. But they didn’t rest there – they also created several non-carbonated drink lines that are right up our alley. They made an organics line, an all-natural juice drink line, a Life/Vitaminwater-esque line (which we still have to try, by the way! Why can we not find this in any stores out here?), and the GABA line. I was particularly impressed by GABA. It already had the base elements of a good review, which are low sugar content and good flavor. But what really put it over the top for me is that it did what it said it would do. I get so jaded from nutritional product claims that when one actually comes through, it’s a huge surprise.  GABA says that it will give you increased awareness and mental clarity, and I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t tested it out for myself. I waited until I had a particularly long and boring meeting at work to pop open my GABA. Conveniently, I had gotten hardly any sleep the night before. But after downing my Lemon Honey Tea, I made it through the entire thing without even the slightest feeling of drowsiness. I was perfectly awake and alert for the entire time. That never happened to me at those meetings! So for me, the proof was in the pudding for GABA.

WiseGuise: I don’t think I can mention anything that Sir Danithius hasn’t already covered, Jones GABA does what it claims. I managed to sneak a few shots of it at last year’s PAX convention, which helped me get through the tedium of waiting in lines for L4D2 and shoving through tightly-packed crowds of pale, gamey game-fans. I just wish I had one right now.

Honest Tea – Organic Lemon Black Tea

WiseGuise: Honest Tea—all Honest products for that matter—has always been one of our favorite beverages around the offices here at Better Libations, and this iced tea did not disappoint. By far the best iced tea I have ever personally had out of a bottle, it rivaled a fresh-brewed tea in pure enjoyability, and that’s saying something. Honest Tea will always have a place in my heart as long as they keep making products like this.

Danithius: Mmm-mmm, Honest Tea. Really, how could you not love them? They have something for everyone. Are you a super-hippie environmentalist? Look no further for USDA certified organic and fair-trade products. A cheapskate? Honest Tea costs the same as most any other bottled beverage. A foodie? Honest Tea uses high-quality ingredients and routinely delivers fresh, delicious flavors. A rabid weight-watcher? You have a huge selection of low-calorie, low-sugar teas to choose from, some of which are even no-calorie! Honest Tea’s tea line really delivers some of the healthiest stuff you can get from the mass-market.

Zevia_Twist Zevia – Natural Twist

WiseGuise: Zevia was kind enough to send us a large amount of beverages after Danithius’ first reviews, and after they re-formulated their products. Our reactions were generally quite positive; we both have become advocates of stevia use, and enjoy seeing it in more products. This particular entry was my personal favorite, and I made quick work of my supply.

Danithius: Zevia was a part of a huge change in the beverage industry this year, namely the reinstatement of stevia as a GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) ingredient by the FDA. (The reason it got banned in the first place is still quite sketchy). The crazy part is, Zevia was operating under the radar as a stevia-sweetened soda even before that happened! They were able to do it by marketing themselves as a “dietary supplement”. Ha! I reviewed a couple of their flavors in those days, but I was not impressed with them at all. But when the news of stevia’s GRAS status hit, Zevia really took the bull by the horns and made the most of the new opportunity. They completely redesigned their flavors and their overall label design. And when this was done, they contacted us at BL to let us know about the makeover, and even sent us a sample pack of the new flavors. We were so impressed with the improvement that we gave all of their flavors a 4.0 or higher – two even scored a perfect 5.0! (Natural Cola for me, Natural Twist for WiseGuise). Zevia has proven they have both a feisty spirit and the good business sense to capitalize on a golden opportunity. They have been steadfastly advocating stevia use for years, believing in its potential as a healthy alternative sweetener. Kudos for sticking to your guns, Zevia! (Stevia really does have a torrid history, look it up sometime if you haven’t already!)

And thus ends the Top 10 Best Healthy Drinks list for 2009.  Thanks to all those drink companies who are going out and terrorizing the status quo every day.  Keep fighting the good fight!  Health-conscious libations-lubbers from the world over are cheering you on!

oogave – Mandarin-Key Lime Review

December 21st, 2009

oogave mandarin key limeYes, finally, the last oogave review that I’ve been putting off for a week.   Christmas shopping has been wreaking havoc on my posting, among other things.  Let’s get down to it, shall we?  Yes, we shall.  I ended up with the other citrus offering from oogave, Mandarin-Key Lime.  This simple soda has only four ingredients, as long as you count ‘natural flavors’ as a single ingredient.

The freshly opened bottle tickles my nose with a citrus-y mandarin feather, but I’m having a hard time detecting the lime.  With a swig, I get that first rush of sweet from the agave, then an orange tang, followed by a hint of lime.  None of the flavors really overwhelm the others except for the sweetness; at least you can say that oogave knows how to play it mellow with the flavors, if you’re into that sort of thing.

I think that Esteban could really play around with the flavors a lot more, make them familiar but interesting.  The sweetness always seems to take control of my taste-buds before the real flavors get a chance to take them for a ride.  I really wanted to like this soda more, but the sugars are the only thing my tongue has any memory of now that I’ve finished the bottle.  Although, I do feel fuller.

Score: 3 out of 5. The understated flavors disappear under the agave sweetness.

oogave – Grapefruit Review

December 14th, 2009

oogave grapefruitAs is usual when we receive a group of drinks to try, we split them up according to our preference, expertise, or just at random.  In this case it was all three.  I chose Esteban’s Rootbeer as my first, since Danithius had already tried it, and I gave my rebuttal.  My second oogave choice was this fruity number, since I am fond of citrus in mostly healthy ways.

Popping the top, my nose is greeted by  light, grapefruit-y scent, sweet and bubbly as your favorite waitress.  The taste follows with an undeniable link to the citrus waft, although more hinted at than fully explored, finishing with a grape-y mellow sweetness with a lingering memory of grapefruit o the back of your tongue.  None of the sour or bitterness I expected is evident, which is usually associated with this particular fruit, but not necessarily in a bad way.  Many are turned off by this pithy flavor in grapefruit, which is unwarranted.  Good grapefruits are sweet.

The agave tends to coat your mouth and throat, definitely leaning this towards being a sipping soda.  The agave nectar does seem to make me feel fuller after topping off my lunch with this, I don’t need to hit the water cooler or find something else to snack on.  I am refreshed and full.  I found this a welcome alternative to traditional sodas, oogave definitely has something here.

Score: 4.5 out of 5. A tad sweet, but definitely a citrus soda I will remember.

oogave – Esteban’s Cola

December 12th, 2009

oogave Estebans Cola

Alright, folks, time to try another soda from oogave.  (Check out our other oogave reviews).  Today I’m trying their cola flavor – the benchmark flavor of any self-respecting soda company.  I wonder how it’ll stack up.  Side note: my current favorite is the surprisingly complex Red Bull Cola – it tickles my fancy as a chef with its unique ingredients, and the flavor tickles my tongue like a good cola should.

I crack open the bottle and am greeted by a peculiar fragrance – something between a root beer, a cola, and a bite of something I can’t quite put my finger on… let’s see how this comes out in the flavor.

Well, the bite part came through a little bit, but not so much on the root beer and cola flavors.  In fact, it’s hard to pick up any distinct flavors in this.  How can I best describe it?  It’s flat.  Hollow.  It has no real body and a weak, astringent finish.  It lacks the sweetness of the other flavors (all of oogave’s current flavors have 24 grams of sugar per 12 oz bottle, and most of them do very well with that relatively small amount.)  It doesn’t say “cola” to me, nor does it remind me of any soda flavor.  It’s like very watered-down molasses mixed with citric acid.

Rating: 2.0 out of 5 - Healthy concept, but the flavor just isn’t there.

oogave – Ginger Ale

December 8th, 2009

oogave Ginger Ale

Time to pop open another oogave – this time it’s their Ginger Ale.  I take a whiff and am punched in the nose by a fresh ginger scent.  It smells real, not like some kind of ginger flavoring or powder.  It’s intense… I wonder how much will come through in the flavor?

Answer: a whole lot!  This is definitely on the intense side of the ginger-ale spice scale.  It has a honey-sweet (agave-sweet, actually) flavor that works well with the ginger extract.  Despite the sweetness, this flavor clocks in at only 24 grams of sugar per bottle.  Impressive.  It does have a slight astringency on the back end, but some of that can be ascribed to the ginger extract.

After nursing half of the bottle, I’ve decided that I’m a fan.  I like the bold ginger flavoring – it’s completely different from the “Dry” ginger ales that flood the popular market.  And yet it’s not so spicy that it’s overwhelming – it’s very sippable.  This could be a great palate-cleanser, or an accompaniment to a spicy meal.  It’s refreshing.

Rating: 4.0 out of 5. A spicy, agave-sweetened ginger ale that’s low on sugar yet high in flavor.

oogave – Watermelon Cream

December 1st, 2009

oogave Watermelon Cream

The folks at Oogave were kind enough to send us a sampler of their six Agave-sweetened sodas. As always, we use the same criterion to judge samples sent to us as we do for our normal reviews. (Though we do give priority in the review queue to them).

Today I’ll jump right to the flavor that first caught my eye – Watermelon Cream. I just now popped open the bottle, and I’m trying to figure out what candy this smell reminds me of. Cotton candy? No. Bubble gum? No… Razzles? Arg, it’s going to drive me crazy.

OK, enough time contemplating the smell, I’m thirsty. I take a sip and let it sink in. There is definitely a bubblegum high note in this, with middle notes that deliver the watermelon flavor nicely. I’m surprised that Oogave pulled off this sweet flavor with only 24 grams of sugar in the whole bottle. (Our favorite measuring stick is a 12 oz can of Coca Cola, which contains 39 grams. There are sodas with even more sugar, but a can of Coke is a good average.) I pour some out into a glass, and am amused to discover a nice light pink-champagne color. The drink doesn’t taste very creamy to me, but the bubble-gummy flavor works well together with the watermelon.

I could see this making my regular rotation – it has low sugar, a refreshing flavor, and a rare choice of sweetener. There are a lot of interesting facts about agave nectar, the most striking of which is its low glycemic load. On oogave’s website they assert that agave nectar has a substantive feel, which helps your body know when it’s “full” in a way that HFCS doesn’t. To use their words, your body “doesn’t allow you to pound down a two-liter bottle [of oogave]. It will let you know when you have had enough”. I just like the fact that oogave is actually advocating moderate use of its product! (And not because they’re forced to, like liquor companies).

For my part, I did feel “full” after drinking this bottle, but I was never one to “pound down a two-liter bottle” of anything, especially HFCS soda, so I don’t know what the difference is like. Maybe I’ll take one for the team and try an experiment sometime…

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.0 – A solid agave-sweetened soda with an original flavor and low sugar.

Oogave – Esteban’s Rootbeer Review

November 3rd, 2009

Oogave -estebans rootbeerHi there Libationers!  Today we bring you an exclusively agave-sweetened root beer by a company called Oogave.  Agave has a very low glycemic index compared to other sweeteners, which means it takes longer for your body to break down and purportedly makes you feel fuller faster.  Oogave points this out on their website, stating that “you can’t pound down a quart of Oogavé like you can a traditional soft drink.”  I respect a company that encourages nutritionally wise use of their product.  I get the feeling that some beverage companies are trying to get me to drink their grog for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  They don’t care how fat I get, as long as it fattens their wallets.  So, props on that, Oogave, thanks for prioritizing customers over revenue.

Now for the product itself: it smells like a caramel-rich root beer, like a root beer flavored lollipop.  The flavor is rather understated.  It is lightly sweet, which is nice – the agave nectar is supposed to be sweeter than normal sugar.  This 12 oz bottle has 24 grams of sugar, which isn’t bad at all for a root beer.  But I feel the flavor lacks the rich and earthy punch that I expect from a good root beer.

I just finished off the bottle, and I do indeed feel full.  Moreso than if it was a regular soda, so it appears that claim is correct.  I liked it, but I don’t think I’ll try this one again.  I am, however, curious to try the other flavors.  I see potential here.

Rating: 3.5/5 - Low-sugar yet filling, low glycemic index, but in need of a more flavorful punch.

-Danithius-

***Review Rebuttal!***

I like the scent I smell, something here that isn’t in other rootbeers, almost like a coffee.  Carbonation is right, nice and creamy, but not a lot of bite.  It seems more like a cream-soda to me than a rootbeer.  Sweetness and body is perfect, but fails as a true rootbeer; I like it more as a cream-soda.  Score: 4 out of 5.
